Which? Trusted Traders Subscription Cost: Is It Worth It for Tradespeople?
The Which? brand carries weight.
Homeowners trust it. Years of magazine reviews and consumer campaigning have made it one of the most recognised names in the UK.
But trust doesn't pay your fuel costs. So what does it actually cost to be listed — and is it worth it?

1. What Does Which? Trusted Traders Actually Cost?
There are two costs to know about.
The assessment fee — £248 including VAT, paid upfront before you're listed. This covers the vetting process: background checks, trading history, customer references.
The monthly subscription — from £66/month including VAT once you're endorsed.
That's a minimum of £816/year before you've won a job through the platform.
Which? does offer 50% off your first six months, which brings the initial outlay down. But after that, you're paying full rate.
2. What Do You Get for That?
A listing in the Which? Trusted Traders directory, visible to homeowners searching for your trade in your area.
The Which? name adds credibility. For homeowners who know the brand, seeing the endorsement on your website or van can really help with trust.
You also get a profile page, access to reviews, and the ability to display the Which? Trusted Trader badge in your marketing.
3. The Problem with Paying to Be Found
The issue isn't the Which? brand. The issue is the model.
You pay a subscription to be listed. But you're listed alongside other trades in your area. Homeowners browse, shortlist, and contact whoever takes their fancy.
That means you're paying every month just for the chance to be considered — not for an exclusive enquiry, not for a guaranteed job.
If your area has several Which? Trusted Traders in your trade, you're competing for the same homeowners. And you're all paying for the privilege.
4. Is It Worth It?
It can be — but it depends heavily on your trade and location.
Which? Trusted Traders tends to work better if:
- You're in a trade with fewer local competitors on the platform
- You operate in an area where homeowners actively search for vetted trades
- You can respond quickly to enquiries
It's harder to justify if you're in a busy market, your area is already well-covered, or you're not seeing return on other platforms you're already paying for.
The maths is simple: at £576/year minimum, you need the platform to generate at least one or two decent jobs just to break even.
5. A Different Approach — Own Your Leads
Instead of paying to appear in someone else's directory, some tradespeople get better results by converting the traffic they already have.
There are some key things that can make your website drive more visitors, and convert those visitors into leads.
Driving more visitors
- Make sure you have individual services pages — three or four pages that cover the main services you offer, including examples of jobs and reviews from happy customers
- Location pages. Google needs to know where you cover. If it doesn't, it won't present you as an option when someone searches "Builder in my area".
- Google Business Profile. A managed and maintained profile on Google, with reviews, pictures and descriptions can often generate more traffic than if you pay for ads!
Converting more visitors to leads
- If you have reviews, put them everywhere. People trust a review as much as a recommendation from a friend.
- Make sure your website has a very clear call to action — something you want the customer to do. In most cases this will be something like "Request a Quote". Make sure the button to request a quote is visible everywhere. The visitor shouldn't have to find it.
- Homeowners are becoming increasingly time sensitive. 78% of people hire the first business to respond. If you're often out on jobs, make sure you have some sort of chat assistant on your website to handle enquiries and capture leads — like Kantr.
6. Automated Lead Capture
Kantr sits on your own website and captures enquiries automatically, day or night. From £39/month, with a 90-day money-back guarantee. No assessment fee. No waiting to be vetted.
It won't replace your reputation or your reviews. But if your website already gets visitors, it makes sure they don't leave without getting in touch.
